EHVRS JUNIOR PROGRAM
Our JUNIOR PROGRAM provides the squad leadership for the future. You may enter our Junior Program at the age of 16. Although due to rules and regulations, those Juniors ages 16 and 17 cannot spend the night at the building, their help during the remainder of the day and night are invaluable to the squad. At age 18, a Junior is allowed to stay at our building and run those nightly calls. Don't worry, parents. East Hanover VRS adheres strictly to all all rules, enforces them constantly, and all Juniors must maintain those good grades while being part of our squad.
At East Hanover, the education of our Junior members is a continuous process and extremely important for the squad's success. All junior members that volunteer for us are required to be certified Emergency Medical Technicians - Basic level within a year of starting their membership. They have the option of being trained as an ambulance driver, and becoming an Attendant-in-Charge while running calls. It may be possible for a junior to continue past EMT-Basic certification, and continue their schooling to become a Paramedic. The East Hanover Juniors have their own Board of Directors, and hold regularly scheduled monthly meetings. They are directed by our Junior Captain of Operations, Mr. Nathan Elswick. Nathan can be reached through our Operations Department at jrcaptain@ehvrs.org.
Several years ago, East Hanover's Executive Board voted to award one deserving student from each of the three local high schools - Lee Davis, Hanover, and Atlee, an annual award of $1,000.00 to continue their education in medicine (emergency or otherwise) upon graduation. The rules and regulations of this award are quite strict and left up to the schools, but many junior members have used the award for continuing their education. The award is named after one of the squad's most loyal and dedicated members - The Milton Throckmorton Award. Milton himself, was dedicated to the enhancement and continuation of the education of our young members. If you are a Junior seeking more information on this Award, please see your school's Guidance Counselors.
In addition to the Milton Throckmorton Award, our juniors have multiple scholarships to apply for as graduation nears. The Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads has a complete listing for all scholarships for deserving juniors who meet the respective criteria. You will find applications to download and complete for the Kimball L. Glass Memorial Scholarship, the Julian Stanley Wise Memorial Scholarship, the Fred E. Weymouth II Scholarship, the Garry Clatterbuck Scholarship, and finally the Trula Peach Scholarship. Simply follow the directions for each Scholarship.

DUSTIN HAZELGROVE WINS THROCKMORTON SCHOLARSHIP
Dustin Hazelgrove, pictured left, was presented with the Milton Throckmorton Scholarship Award during the Senior Awards Program at Atlee High School. As this year's recipient, Dustin received a check for $1,000.00 to use as he begins his college education at Virginia Commonwealth University..
Mr. Hazelgrove is a member of the East Hanover Junior Program, who are our squad members from ages 16 through 20. Dustin has been a major player in the Junior program as they had a spectacular year. Dustin was elected at the start of the EHVRS Junior Year as their First Lieutenant, and was responsible for such events as their Car Wash, Pizza Hut Drive, and tee shirt design and sales. Throughout the year, Dustin carried a full year of academic work, along with his duties at the rescue squad. Running 40 to 50 hours as a volunteers per month, was something Dustin accomplished on a regular basic. He is a humble person, giving more of himself to the community he serves as well as his friends and fellow squad volunteers.
Dustin's background in volunteering goes back a few generations as his grandmother was a EHVRS Founding and Life Member. As former President Kimberly Kinker states, "I'm proud of Dustin for all he has accomplished and how he has persevered through the tough stuff in life this past year. I'm glad to see members like Dustin carrying on a tradition of volunteerism like his grandmother, Tilly Grubbs, and siblings have done. Dustin has a very bright and good educational future ahead of him!!"

JUNIORS NOMINATED FOR SPIRIT OF VOLUNTEERISM AWARD
The Juniors from East Hanover Volunteer Rescue Squad were nominated by the members of the squad for the Spirit of Volunteerism Award that was presented at Hanover High School in May. They were presented with a Certificate of Recognition for the program that night. Although the East Hanover Juniors did not receive first place, the members of the squad realized that through their never ending supply of energy, patience, and ability to move this program forward, all knew that they were #1 at the squad!
Seen from left to right are EHVRS Juniors, Gavin Shaler, Travis Gourtny, Nathan Elswick holding the Certificate, Matt O'Donnell, and Dustin Hazelgrove.
Congratulations to all juniors at EHVRS. You are the future, and it is, indeed, bright!
